GPX Import

The GPX import function lets you bring existing route data into a roadbook: tracks are drawn on the map and waypoints become roadbook instructions.

Overview

GPX element Result in Tulip
<trk> (track) Loaded onto the map
<wpt> (waypoint) Converted to a roadbook instruction

Supported waypoint features

When waypoints (<wpt>) are imported, Tulip supports the following:

  • Import name to note – the waypoint <name> is copied into the note field of the generated instruction.
  • Detect and add fuel icon – if the waypoint is recognised as a fuel stop, a fuel icon is added to the instruction automatically.
  • Detect and add danger icon – if the waypoint is recognised as a danger, a danger icon is added to the instruction automatically.

Usage

Importing a GPX file

  1. Create a ne roadbook in Tulip or open an existing one to append the GPX route.
  2. In the menu bar, choose File → Import GPX.
  3. In the file dialog, pick the .gpx file you want to import and confirm.
  4. Tulip processes the file:
    • Tracks are loaded and displayed on the map.
    • Each waypoint is added to the roadbook as an instruction.
  5. Review the result:
    • Check that the track follows the expected route on the map.
    • Check that instruction notes contain the waypoint names.
    • Check that fuel and danger waypoints carry the correct icons, and adjust manually if needed.

Example

Given this GPX file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<gpx version="1.1" creator="example" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1">
  <wpt lat="38.0000" lon="23.7000">
    <sym>Gas Station</sym>
  </wpt>
  <wpt lat="38.0100" lon="23.7100">
    <name>Danger - rocks</name>
    <sym>Alert</sym>
  </wpt>
  <wpt lat="38.0200" lon="23.7200">
    <name>Turn left at junction</name>
  </wpt>
  <trk>
    <name>Stage 1</name>
    <trkseg>
      <trkpt lat="38.0000" lon="23.7000"></trkpt>
      <trkpt lat="38.0100" lon="23.7100"></trkpt>
      <trkpt lat="38.0200" lon="23.7200"></trkpt>
    </trkseg>
  </trk>data
</gpx>

After File → Import, the result is:

Waypoint name Instruction note Icon added
Fuel station Fuel station Fuel
Danger - rocks Danger - rocks Danger
Turn left at junction Turn left at junction none

The track "Stage 1" appears on the map.

Notes

  • Icon detection is automatic and based on the waypoint symbols <sym></sym>; always verify the generated icons before using the roadbook in competition.
  • Imported instructions can be edited like any other instruction after import.
